Must-See Park Sights
You made it all this way, it’s time to marvel at Sequoia’s namesake species. Named by “Father of the National Parks” John Muir, you’ll want to carve out plenty of time to explore the Giant Forest. It’s home to half of the largest (and longest-living) trees on Earth.
Start at the Giant Forest Museum to learn about the park’s fascinating origins, brush up on tree identification, and experience tons of interactive exhibits.
This jaw-dropping area’s real headliner is the General Sherman Tree. Standing roughly 275 feet tall, the 2,000-year-old, 2.7-million-pound Giant Sequoia is truly one-of-a-kind. We could go on and on about the majestic sight, but words don’t do it justice. You have to experience it for yourself.
Craving a physical challenge? Trek up Moro Rock, where climbing 400 stone steps has never looked better. High above the Giant Forest sequoia grove, insane Sierra Nevada views definitely make up for tired legs.
You can also opt for the aptly named Lakes Trail, an 11.6-mile out-and-back journey with glimpses of four stunning alpine lakes. The moderate trail is accessible on a first-come, first-served basis, so grab a permit at the Lodgepole Visitor Center the day before or morning of your hike.
Speaking of sparkling waters, splash around a few waterfalls while you’re in town. Whether it’s the dramatic granite cliffs of Grizzly Falls in Kings Canyon, or the massive Tokopah Falls in Sequoia, there’s no shortage of breathtaking natural features around here.
If driving through beauty is more up your alley, consider a road trip along Generals Highway. Coast alongside enormous sequoia and redwood trees, incredible vistas, meadows, and native wildlife. You can even snap a quick pic at the iconic Tunnel Log, carved from a huge fallen tree that dates back to the 1930s.
Beyond the Parks
Central California has more to enjoy than just the national parks. Right down the road from AutoCamp Sequoia, along the Kaweah River, you’ll find Slick Rock Recreation Area– a chill place to stroll, fish, and relax with your crew. Walk along the rocky shore known by climbers as “The Boulder Beach,” or spread out for a laid-back picnic.
Want a break from the outdoor action? Head into the small, artsy village of Three Rivers. Browse the shops and galleries, and keep an eye out for numerous painted murals that shine light on local history.
Of course, no visit is complete without a stop at Reimer’s Candies and Gifts. Grab a few queenies and a mint chocolate chip scoop for the road.
