Joshua Tree, CA:

National Parks aren’t always the most dog-friendly, and Joshua Tree is no exception. Dogs are only allowed on designated paths and in developed areas of the park– no hiking trails. Luckily, there are still other ways to enjoy:

  • Keys View: An amazing, panoramic viewpoint of the surrounding Coachella Valley. It’s paws down one of the best spots to watch the sunset.
  • Bighorn Pass Road: Round up Rover and walk along the road to take in the unique Joshua trees, cholla cactus, and mountains off in the distance.
  • Pappy + Harriet’s: This iconic Pioneertown venue is best known for its live music and authentic Santa Maria barbecue, but they also open their trellis doors to dogs when there’s no show.
  • La Copine: Check out La Copine for the best food in the desert, stay for the doggo-approved patio and the chance to end up on their exclusive Instagram, @dogsoflacopine.

Russian River, CA:

  • Russian River rafting: Ever heard of a dog-friendly canoe? Russian River Adventures in Sonoma County encourages four-paw passengers to jump in their inflatable vessels.
  • Shell Beach on Sonoma Coast: Head to the coast (about 13 miles from AutoCamp) to a popular pooch-inclusive beach. This spot is great for tide pooling and splashing in the salty waves.
  • Stumptown Brewing: Chill vibes, friendly service, great food. And the big outdoor space overlooking the river and designated pet relief area is sure to earn a few extra tail wags.
  • boon eat + drink: A chic, farm-to-table restaurant that also welcomes dogs? Meet you there.

Sequoia, CA:

Pets aren’t allowed in most of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, but you can still drive the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, which snakes in and out of the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument.

  • Kaweah Oaks Preserve: Hike some of this 344-acre nature preserve’s several pet-friendly trails, each less than one mile and surrounded by ancient oaks and vibrant wildflowers.
  • Exeter Bark Park: The name speaks for itself– bring your buddy to an off-leash park to run off the zoomies.

Yosemite, CA:

Yosemite National Park is decidedly pet-friendly, with most fully paved roads and paths allowing leashed dogs. Just pay special attention to signage.

  • Wawona Meadow Loop: This 3.5-mile hike loops one of Yosemite’s most scenic meadows, including a bit of the Wawona Golf Course. Four-legged friends will love the sprawling sights.
  • Bridalveil Fall: It’s just a short hike to the base of this stunning waterfall where leashed dogs are not only welcomed, but encouraged.

  • Coulter Cafe + General Store: A dog-friendly cafe whipping up deliciously fresh fare seven days a week. Bite into breakfast, lunch or dinner beside your furry friend on the patio or front porch.

Zion, UT:

Zion National Park is pretty strict on pets, too, but enjoying the Utah beauty is definitely worth finding some creative ways to explore with the pup:

  • Pa’rus Trail: The only trail in Zion National Park where dogs are allowed, Pa’rus begins at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center and extends 3.5 paved miles around the stunning Virgin River.
  • George Barker River Park: Outside Zion in charming Springdale, George Barker River Park has magical views and nature trails, plus plenty of places for Fido to swim and play in the water.
  • Oscar’s Cafe: Tex Mex is just what the doctor ordered after a long day of exploring. Enjoy it with your dog on Oscar’s roomy, covered patio.
  • Deep Creek Coffee Company: Grab your morning cup at this coffee shop and cafe with a large patio area shaded by big, beautiful trees.

Note to humans: Please clean up after your furry friends! And always comply with local and state leash laws so that we can keep these areas beautiful and safe for one and all.
